Conflict, Power Struggles & Communication

Are communication problems causing relationship conflict and stress?

People often believe that high conflict and major communication problems mean a relationship is broken and unfixable. Resentment, competition for being “right” and feeling unheard or misunderstood are typical responses, and can be red flags you need additional support for navigating difficult times.

What if my partner doesn’t want to come to therapy with me?

Even if your partner declines therapy, you can still address your concerns in individual counseling. I will work with you to understand your part in the relationship, and identify the things you would like to change about your own behavior within the relationship.

How can therapy help me?

In my work with you, I see the relationship as the client, with each individual contributing to the dynamic of interaction. I provide a safe space to share difficult things and ensure that each person is heard and understood.

Through understanding the pattern of relationship conflict and incorporating concrete tools to navigate communication problems, I provide a safe space for partners to have equal footing and for each person to feel empowered.

Do you offer counseling across New York State?

I do! I offer virtual sessions via a telehealth platform that is simple to use and HIPAA-compliant for privacy. I conduct all sessions from a private office.

Can one person in therapy really help a relationship?

Yes! Understanding yourself within the context of your relationship absolutely helps in terms of increasing awareness of your attachment and conflict styles, setting boundaries, and changing how you respond to your partner. By “disrupting” the usual pattern of interaction, you may motivate your partner to respond differently too.

Relationship conflict is common in partnerships and marriages

Every relationship encounters challenges, miscommunication and resentments, and navigating those conflicts is what creates a successful, supportive connection. A problem that remains is that people often wait until resentment has become toxic before they seek outside support.
