Couples Counseling
How can couples counseling help us?
Are you or your partner feeling alone and misunderstood in your relationship? Do you find yourselves having the same conflicts erupt over and over again? Is lack of trust or resentment becoming stronger than intimacy and connection?
No matter who you are, who you are with or your history in relationships, all couples experience conflict and communication challenges at some point.
Counseling can help people work through any number of issues including:
- Communication
- Trust
- Resentment
- Attachment
- Substance Use
- Infidelity
- Sexual and emotional intimacy
- Differences in libido
Unfortunately, there continues to be a stigma associated with couples counseling, which is that it represents a “last ditch effort” in a failing relationship.
The reason for this is simply that many couples wait until problems are unavoidable before they seek counseling.
The fact is that whether you are in a newly committed relationship or a long-term partnership, at any point you can discover a stronger connection together through couples therapy.
Will you help us decide if our relationship can be saved or if breaking up is better?
In couples counseling, I always view the relationship as the client, with each individual
contributing to the dynamic of interaction. I see myself as a coach rather than a referee and don’t
believe it is my place to determine whether or not a relationship will or should continue.
I work in tandem with couples to help you clarify what is best for your relationship and how to move
forward on whatever path feels right.
Does therapy work for everyone?
If both partners are invested in improving the relationship and open to working to change, I believe counseling can work for most couples!
Can we see you separately if we need some extra time or help?
After the first two sessions, I often meet with each client once individually to get a deeper understanding of them and their history. After that, if a need or desire to have any follow up individual sessions arises, we will decide together what the best approach is and what is comfortable for everyone.
How long does it take for things to get better?
Depending upon your goals and needs, couples counseling can achieve results in 10-12 sessions. In fact, many couples begin to see improvements in mutual understanding, communication and connection in just a few sessions!
Do you offer teletherapy across New York State?
I do! I offer virtual sessions via a telehealth platform that is simple to use and HIPAA-compliant for privacy. I conduct all sessions from a private office.
