Individual Counseling

How can individual counseling help me?

For many people, it can be one of the most important decisions they make, and I applaud you for taking the brave, bold step toward change and a deeper understanding of yourself.

Finding an individual therapist who is the right fit can feel a lot like finding a good relationship in NYC through a dating app.

How do you know whether a therapist is the right one for you?

People seek counseling for many reasons, whether to manage specific issues like anxiety, relationships, substance use, or depression, to gain a better understanding of themselves and their past, or to move through feeling “stuck” in a particular stage in life. I view every client as a combination of unique experiences, family dynamics, and psychological and biological factors.

I work with you as an investigator, excavator and coach to help you have a deeper understanding of yourself as well as to grow and change behaviors and thinking that feel problematic. Trained in multiple treatment modalities, I never have a “one size fits all” approach, and I will actively join you in your personal journey in therapy.

Is talk therapy enough to change?

Absolutely! While talking is the medium we use, the catalyst for change is the relationship we build together in therapy. I actively participate in sessions with you and will sometimes prescribe homework or other exercises to complete both in-session and outside of sessions.

Talk therapy can help you...

● Understand, shape and clarify your thoughts and feelings.
● Address difficult issues such as shame, substance use, family and relationship conflicts.
● Manage strong emotions more effectively.
● Heal traumatic experiences.

I work alongside you, and together we explore issues around love and family relationships, problematic behaviors and perceptions of self, and how shame, vulnerability, and trauma shape you in a safe and non-judgmental space.

I will support you in understanding and processing your experience, and incorporating tools into your life to change according to YOUR personal goals.

Do I need a formal diagnosis to qualify for individual counseling, or can we just talk?

The only diagnosis required for therapy is being human! Anyone and everyone qualifies for and can benefit from therapy. I never approach a new client with the goal of labeling them or checking a box, because every individual has a unique psychological make-up. Our first session will entail my getting to know you and what is most important to you, as well as understanding what you want to achieve.

Do We Do Anything More Than Talk? Is That Enough?

While talking is the medium we use, the catalyst for change is the relationship we build together in therapy. I actively participate in sessions with you and will sometimes prescribe homework or other exercises to complete both insession and outside of sessions.

Talk therapy can help you in many ways, including:

● Give shape and clarity to your thoughts and feeling.
● Broaden and explore your range of emotions around your life and the things troubling you.
● Teach you how to manage strong emotions more effectively.
● The experience of being listened to by a non-judgmental person so you recondition how you want to experience relationships.
● Rewires your brain.

I work in tandem with you, and together we explore love and family relationships, problematic behaviors and perceptions of self, and how shame, vulnerability, and trauma shape you in a safe and non-judgmental space.

I will support you in understanding and processing your experience, and incorporating tools into your life to change according to YOUR personal goals.

Does therapy work for everyone?

Therapy can help most people, but the most important element for success is finding a therapist with whom you feel safe and connected. There are many “modalities” of treatment in which I am trained, and I find that tailoring therapy to an individual’s needs, personality and goals is the critical factor.

How will my life get better with therapy?

The benefits of therapy can be both bold and subtle. Whether modifying specific behaviors, such as alcohol use or self-harm or shifting oppressive patterns, such as lack of self-esteem or obsessive thoughts, changes result in you feeling freer with a stronger sense of self and better relationship with others.

How long does it take to feel better?

Therapy can be short-term or long-term, depending on your personal wants and needs. I know people who seek therapy to work through a specific problem and achieve their goal in a few months, as well as people who remain in therapy for much longer periods so that they have support to work through life issues as they arise. And often initial goals shift and change during the process and that’s OK too!

Do you offer teletherapy across New York State?

I do! I offer virtual sessions via a telehealth platform that is simple to use and HIPAA-compliant for privacy. I conduct all sessions from a private office.
